The Garden Remedies Story

Dr. Munkacy founded Garden Remedies to address the challenges people face in seeking all-natural remedies and treatments for some of the most prevalent, debilitating maladies of modern life.

As a medical doctor, Dr. Munkacy knew too well the side effects of traditional pharmaceuticals, the economic and social barriers separating Americans from health care, and the impact of traditional medical care on the Earth’s environment.  “There has to be a better way,” Dr. Munkacy decided; and in Garden Remedies, she found that better way.

Dr. Karen Munkacy established Garden Remedies– the first physician- and woman-founded dispensary brand in Massachusetts– in 2013. Garden Remedies provides convenient access to safe, top-quality cannabis to all patients, with a focus on sustainability and social equity.  We believe every patient deserves access to the benefits of cannabis in achieving a better quality of life.

How Does Medical Cannabis Promote Wellness?

Garden Remedies is a cannabis dispensary in Massachusetts offering high grade, lab-tested medical cannabis. Studies show that medical cannabis, or medical marijuana, can alleviate and even stop a wide range of chronic health conditions. Chronic pain, arthritis, insomnia, nausea, anxiety, inability to focus, low energy, and depression are among just a few of the debilitating problems for which Garden Remedies offers treatment.

In many cases, traditional Western medicine and pharmacology have failed these patients or are simply unavailable to them. By offering high-quality, reasonably priced cannabis products that are all-natural and grown at our own cultivation facility, Garden Remedies is meeting the demand for a better alternative.

Garden Remedies offers three cannabis dispensaries in Massachusetts. In the Marlborough Garden Remedies Medical Dispensary, the Melrose Medical Dispensary and the Newton Medical Dispensary,  we offer wellness in the form of a wide assortment of organic, all-natural cannabis products.

The Science of Garden Remedies

Because there are so many options among Garden Remedies cannabis products, let’s look closer at the science behind our ingredients

What is the difference between indica and sativa?

The two main types of cannabis, indica and sativas.

  • Indicas
    • Indica strains, or chemovars, are typically associated with whole-body effects, promoting deep relaxation and better sleep.
  • Sativas
    • This strain, or chemovar, is associated with a “head high” experience, and can produce an energizing effect, increasing mental focus and creativity as well as reducing anxiety.
  • Hybrids
    • Many of Garden Remedies products consist of a hybrid of indica and sativa. , depending on the desired effect.

What are cannabinoids

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds that are found in cannabis that have positive effects on the human body.

THC and CBD are two commonly known types of cannabinoid, and in fact,  CBD and THC are chemically similar to the human body's own endocannabinoids: humans have both THC and CBD cannabinoid receptors in our bodies.

  • THC

THC stands for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC). THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. THC binds primarily with receptors in the brain that control pain, mood, and other feelings. THC is associated with the euphoric feeling of being “high.”

  • CBD

CBD doesn't cause that high, but instead works with other elements in the body linked to feelings of well-being. People take CBD products to help with a wide range of chronic conditions, as this cannabinoid is said to improve anxiety, sleep, and chronic pain.

  • CBN

CBN is a non-intoxicating compound that is best known as the cannabinoid created when THC ages, usually present in higher amounts in older cannabis. With its anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant, and anti-bacterial properties, it has been used in therapies for cancer, arthritis and in improving sleep

  • CBC

CBC, or cannabichromene, is non-intoxicating as well. CBC can increase the body’s own levels of natural endocannabinoids. CBC is a powerful combatant in the fight against inflammation, and the CBC in cannabis can also be used to improve memory, mental focus, and depression.

Lesser-known compounds found in cannabis

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are lesser-known element found in cannabis that is also bioactive, and depending on the concentration and type of terpene, can affect the body in different ways.

Terpenes produce vibrant smells, and form the basis of cannabis oils and concentrates. These heady scents offer the benefits of aromatherapy as well as enhance the effects of cannabinoids in our products.

Types of Terpenes

Types of Terpenes

  • Myrcene
    • Myrcene is the most common form of Terpene. Myrcene is found in hops, lending its fragrance to the spicy scent of beer; and in lemongrass, a long popular ingredient in traditional folk medicine, particularly as a relaxant. Myrcene can be helpful in better sleep as well as for anxiety and stress.
  • Pinene
    • Pinene is an aromatic compound that smells of pine. Pinene is found in conifer trees, orange peel, botanical herbs as well as cannabis. Pinene is thought to be anti-inflammatory, helping with pain management and recovery. It can also help with respiration and allergies, as its astringent undertones can help open airways. It’s also used for anti-anxiety and mental acuity and focus.
  • Caryophyllen
    • Caryophyllene, with its warm spicy scent, can be found naturally in herbs and spices such as black pepper and oregano, as well as cannabis. Caryophyllene can help combat pain, and is complementary to therapy aimed at curbing addiction, as it is thought to help with cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
  • Limonene
    • Limonene, a lemony scented terpene, is found in citrus peel as well as cannabis. Limonene is indicated in treatments for pain, nausea, chronic illnesses such as cancer, and for clearing airways in cases of chest congestion. Its bright scent can also work in creating energy and improving focus.
  • Terpinolene
    • Terpinolene’s bouquet-like scent, at once woodsy, floral, and citrusy.  It occurs naturally in a variety of botanical herbs as well as trees such as consider, apple, and tea trees. Terpinolene can have mild to moderate sedative effects, making it a strong candidate for sleep therapy, relaxation, and anti-anxiety.
  • Linalool
    • Linalool carries a lavender scent. Studies indicate that Linalool can be effective in blocking receptors in the brain associated with seizures and can be part of antiepileptic therapy. This terpene can also enhance the effect of other sedatives and is used to promote deeper, more restful sleep and in the treatment of anxiety.

The Garden Remedies Menu

The results vary in flavor, THC content (and by default, potency), and overall effect. They can help everything from achieving deep concentration to deep calm, and more.
  • Edibles
  • Pre-rolls
    • Garden Remedies’ pre-rolls are hand rolled dutchies containing various strains and a range of THC levels, as well as other natural ingredients to enhance both the effects and the overall experience. Consumers can choose from a variety of single pre-rolls and multi-pack pre-rolls.
  • Concentrates
    • Garden Remedies’ concentrates  come in a wide variety of consistencies and potencies. In creating our concentrates, we isolate and remove the cannabinoids through natural processes to create a potent product. Because concentrates have an immediate activation time, they are generally used by experienced cannabis consumers.
  • Tinctures
  • Topicals
    • Garden Remedies’ cannanis-infused salves, and balms. These are applied to the skin, and perhaps especially on top of an affected area of the body. Topicals come in a variety of potencies, using all-natural, organic and whenever possible, locally-sourced ingredients.
  • Full Spectrum extract
    • Full Spectrum Extract (SFE), also known as CO2 oil, maintains all the richest cannabinoids of our best strain-specific cannabis. SFE stands for “supercritical fluid extraction,” which is the solvent- and impurity-free system Garden Remedies uses to create Full Spectrum Extract. The resulting oil features all properties of the flower itself—not just THC but also terpenes and other rarer cannabinoids too.
